Convocation ‘25: Emma Werbowesky, BMus
Shirley Wilfong-Pritchard - 2 June 2025
Music has always played a big role in Emma’s life. She is graduating with a bachelor of music degree from Augustana, where she has enjoyed enhancing her skills in singing and performance, learning about the teaching of music and taking on leadership roles in two choirs.
Emma plans to continue her education at U of A next fall, as she embarks on a master of vocal performance at North Campus.
Congratulations, Emma!
What led you to choose your current area of study, and why the U of A Augustana for your studies?
I have always loved singing and Augustana gave me some classes on teaching, as well, which I felt would be useful.
What is one of your favourite memories from your time at Augustana?
My favourite memory would have to be my grad recital. A bunch of friends and family made it and I felt so accomplished. All of my hard work over the last four years came to that moment and I felt so proud that I had done it.
Tell us about your favourite professor/lecturer and/or class.
My favourite class was definitely music education. I got to go to class every day and have philosophical discussions on education and how to teach a culturally diverse classroom. I left class with new ideas and thoughts about education. It really is a great class.
Did you take on any leadership roles while you were a student, either on campus or in the Camrose community?
Since I was a music student, I was a part of two choirs: The Augustana Choir and SingAble. In the Augustana Choir, I was on the Choir Executive as properties and social media coordinator. I was also the soprano section leader for a year and a half. As the section leader, I ran sectionals and helped my fellow colleagues when needed. In SingAble, I was a teaching assistant (TA). I helped lead the rehearsals each week. If the director was sick, the other TAs and I took over and ran the rehearsal that week.
How did you get where you are today?
Lots of hard work. I know it’s cliché, but staying on top of things and looking out for opportunities is how I managed to get here today.
What advice do you have for current and future students?
University is a stepping stone to get you where you want to be. Use it as such. Work hard for your grades. Create lots of connections. Look for things to do that will make you stand out as a student. If you can do that, then you’ll be just fine.
How do you plan on celebrating convocation?
By having a drink or two with friends and family.
What's next after graduation?
Next year, I start my master's in vocal performance at the U of A North Campus in Edmonton!
