Pilot Grant in Palliative Care Research
The Palliative Care Pilot Grants is a competitive program sponsored by the ß÷ßäÉçÇø Cancer Foundation Chair in Palliative Care and provides financial resources to support emerging research pertaining to palliative care. Research from all four pillars of health research will be considered (biomedical, clinical, health services, and population health).
The pilot grant objectives are to facilitate innovative ideas, assist future applications to external granting agencies, and/or support collaborative team development. All applications are peer-reviewed.
Funding up to $10,000 is available for a one-year period. Application deadline is October 31st. The committee decisions regarding funding will be emailed to applicants approximately 6 weeks after the submission deadline. All applicants will be notified of the status of their application.
Overview
- Applications must focus on any research project pertaining to palliative care.
- Applications will be evaluated based on the applicant’s expertise and the merit of the proposal
- Applications will be reviewed by a committee members from the Faculty of Medicine, including representatives from CRINA and the Division of Palliative Care.
- All project PIs are required to apply for and receive ethics approval from the ß÷ßäÉçÇø Research Ethics office prior to conducting their study funded by this grant mechanisms. While ethics is not required at time of applying for this grant, it may be required prior to release of funds.
Eligibility + Guidelines
- A1.1, C1.1 faculty across all faculties and disciplines. Trainees of faculty members can be co-applicants (this includes graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, research associates)
- The grant applicant should confirm with the Chair of their department regarding their eligibility to hold a grant as per their terms of appointment
- Award holders must be CRINA members. Applications will be accepted from non-CRINA members; CRINA membership may be requested at the time of the award.
- Grant proposal may have multiple PIs if applicable for one project
- Each faculty member can only apply for one grant in one funding cycle either as PI or CoI.
- Funding can only be requested for projects that were not previously funded through this or other mechanisms
- Eligible expenses include operating costs and salaries for trainees, technicians
Final Report
Successful applications will be required to submit a final report outlining their main findings and any relevant output.

- 1 page research proposal (single-spaced, 12 pt Times font, 1-inch margins)
- 1 page of figures (only if needed)
- 1 page budget ($10,000 max; additional pages for quotes may be added, if needed)
- Streamlined CV:
- List of all grants in the last 5 years
- Top 5 papers in the last 5 years
- List of past and current trainees (graduate/postgraduate) in last 5 years
Completed applications should be merged into a single PDF and emailed to crina@ualberta.ca with the subject heading “Palliative Care Pilot Research Grant”
