A Celebration of Life, Career, and Research. The International Cell Biology Symposium

Back in 1986, what might have seemed to many a small movement in organizational structure - the inclusion of the words, Cell Biology to the Department of Anatomy - has proven to be a seismic shift in research and esteem for the ß÷ßäÉçÇø. It may have been small at first and perhaps to some - or many - it was insignificant. But to the researcher behind the move, Dr. Richard Rachubinski, this was the beginning of a brand new way of thinking and conducting research in medicine and health.

Almost four decades later, the world literally came to Edmonton to celebrate what has been accomplished at the Department of Cell Biology by presenting their work, findings, and stories at the International Cell Biology Symposium on June 6, 2025.

The event was attended by over 100 people from across the university's spectrum. This was not an event solely for faculty but also for students, support staff, technological experts, and industry. The faces in the room represented the true nature of research in the 21st Century.

The list of speakers had two things in common. They all had their start in the Department of Cell Biology and they have made significant and lasting impacts in the scientific and medical communities. Dr. Rachubinki was delighted to hear of the successes that have come from the nucleus he created.

While the event lasted only a day, the memories that were shared spanned back decades and gave everyone in attendance the opportunity to make their own memories that they can share for decades to come.

While this event may have been a celebration of one researcher's successes, it was by no means a conclusion. Instead, it revealed that the research will continue far beyond this date and that what happened in 1986 will continue to impact our world without end.

Congratulations to Dr. Rachubinski for making a dream come to reality and to the Department of Cell Biology for ensuring that dream will continue without end.
