The Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation invites you to its inaugural annual lecture designed to explore timely and critical topics within the dynamic field of leisure and recreation. This year, we are welcoming Carl Honoré, an award-winning writer, broadcaster, two-time TED speaker, and former Edmontonian.
How to Embrace Aging as an Adventure
We are living better for longer than ever before. Scientists, artists and entrepreneurs are hitting their stride later in life. Pop culture, from movies to modelling to the media, is carving out more room for people past the first flush of youth. We are entering a golden age of aging. Bottom line: there has never been a better time in history to grow older. Drawing on the latest science, stories and case studies from around the world, Carl inspires audiences (whatever age they are) to embrace aging as an adventure.
A reception will follow the lecture. We will also share some of the exciting leisure and recreation research currently underway at KSR.
This hybrid event is open to everyone – alumni, students, staff/faculty and members of the wider public. There is free parking (Lot M) in front of the conference centre and the Health Sciences LRT Station is just a 7-minute walk away. Lister Conference Centre is fully accessible. Alternatively, you can watch the keynote live online.
We look forward to welcoming you to this landmark event!

After working with street children in Brazil, Carl covered Europe and South America for the Economist, Observer, Miami Herald, Houston Chronicle, National Post (Canada), Time and other publications. His first book, In Praise of Slow, chronicles the global trend toward putting on the brakes in everything from work to food to parenting. The Financial Times said it is “to the Slow Movement what Das Kapital is to communism”. Carl’s second book, Under Pressure, explores how to raise and educate children in a fast world and was hailed by Time as a “gospel of the Slow Parenting movement”. Carl’s third book, The Slow Fix, explores how to tackle complex problems in every walk of life, from health and relationships to business and politics, without falling for superficial, short-term quick fixes. His fourth book, Bolder: How To Age Better And Feel Better About Ageing, is a spirited manifesto against ageism. Published in 36 languages, Carl has landed on bestseller lists in many countries. Though he now lives in London, UK, Carl is originally from Edmonton – and is a huge Oilers fan!
