Dr. Oleksandr Pankieiev

Dr. Oleksandr Pankieiev is Director of the Kule Folklore Centre, as well as Associate Professor and Kule Chair of Ukrainian Ethnography in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies.
Prior to this appointment, Dr. Pankieiev served as Research Coordinator at the Canadian Institute for Ukrainian Studies (CIUS) and Editor-in-Chief of the Forum for Ukrainian Studies. He is widely recognized for his academic scholarship, intellectual leadership, and meaningful contributions to public discourse on Ukrainian culture and society.
Dr. Pankieiev’s research focuses on ethnography, the history of Steppe (Southern) Ukraine, Ukrainian Canadian diaspora studies, and digital folklore and media studies. His recent publications include the 2024 article “Changing Motifs in Digital Folklore Characters of the Russo-Ukrainian War,” published in Canadian Slavonic Papers, which was awarded the Canadian Association of Slavists / Canadian Slavonic Papers “Article of the Year” Award. In 2025, he edited the volume Narratives of the Russo-Ukrainian War: A Look Within and Without (ibidem Press). A Spanish-language translation of this book—Ecos de Guerra: Perspectivas Académicas sobre la Invasión Rusa a Ucrania—was published in Argentina.
Also in 2025, Dr. Pankieiev co-directed the documentary film Horizons of Belonging, which explores the personal stories of four Ukrainian families who resettled in ß÷ßäÉçÇø, Canada, following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
A committed advocate for community outreach, Dr. Pankieiev brings extensive experience from his leadership roles in several community, cultural, and educational organizations, including the ß÷ßäÉçÇø Society for the Advancement of Ukrainian Studies, the ß÷ßäÉçÇø Local and International Education Association, and the ß÷ßäÉçÇø Ukrainian Film Festival.
