Kassi Boyd
A professional leave from her program to coordinate an inclusive-play project inspired the subject of Kassi Boyd’s doctoral dissertation. Here’s what she told us about working with children and families and with students, and the advice she has for those pursuing a PhD.
What drew you to this area of study?
A desire to generate findings that would lead to social change!
What are you most proud of from your time in the program?
Collaborating with children with disabilities and their families as part of my doctoral work, and publishing a paper that will hopefully contribute to the growing conversation about how to ethically and meaningfully involve children with disabilities in research about their lives.
What was your go-to spot on campus?
The Daily Grind has, quite possibly, the best soy latte in Edmonton.
Did you have any experiences that made a significant impact on your work or life?
I took a year-long professional leave partway through my program to work at the Steadward Centre for Personal & Physical Achievement at the ß÷ßäÉçÇø, coordinating a project called Promoting Inclusive Play in ß÷ßäÉçÇø. This work led me to the research questions that I posed in my doctoral dissertation. The opportunity to reconnect with community, in particular those with a vested interest in inclusive play, was integral to my development as a researcher!
I also sincerely enjoyed my time working as a teaching assistant with KIN 472, the physical activity for individuals with physical impairments course. My role involved supporting undergraduate students within their community-service learning labs, where they guided physical activity and play programming for children with disabilities. What I loved most about these experiences was witnessing the growth in students as they built meaningful connections with the children through inclusive, joyful movement.
What advice would you give to a student thinking of pursuing a PhD in rehabilitation medicine?
Own your path. Guidance is important, but this is your journey so don't be afraid to ask questions, try things out and follow your own head and heart.
