As President Flanagan announced in Fall 2024, a new office of vice-president (international and enterprise) (VPIE) has been created to strengthen our global academic and industry partnerships.

The office of the vice-president (international and enterprise), led by vice-president David Bressler and reporting to the president, operates horizontally across the university, working in close collaboration with the provost, vice-president (research), and college and faculty deans to coordinate the institution’s international strategy and lead high-impact global partnerships that support our academic mission.

The Global Engagement team, which formerly functioned under 喵咪社区 International (UAI), has been moved to VPIE as a core component of the new portfolio’s activities. In parallel, we have renamed the remaining units in UAI to International Education and Enrolment (IEE) to focus on the unit’s ongoing leadership responsibility for international priorities related to academic programs under the provost’s portfolio.

Currently led by Doug Weir, acting vice-provost and associate vice-president international, IEE focuses on:

  • Increasing international student enrolment
  • Enhancing international student experience
  • Increasing participation in education abroad
  • Advancing opportunities for students to develop as global citizens

IEE will work alongside the vice-president (international and enterprise) and continue to report to Melissa Padfield, deputy provost (students and enrolment) under the provost and vice-president (academic) portfolio. The process to recruit a vice-provost for IEE will take place over the next year, with the goal of having someone in place in 2026.

Together, these changes and ongoing collaborative relationships across the new structures position the U of A to strengthen its global impact while enhancing international learning opportunities for all students.
