Important information:

  • Successful applicants MUST be able to perform research in Canada for the entire duration of their funding period. For example, a scholarship for a 4 month or 1 academic term means that the internship candidate must be present and performing research at ß÷ßäÉçÇø for all four (4) months. Shortened internships periods are not able to be considered, as per ELAP guidelines.
  • Research internship start dates at the ß÷ßäÉçÇø MUST fall between September 1 through February 1 for the 2026-2027 application cycle.
  • For undergraduate applications for a research-based experience, a written institutional collaboration and student exchange agreement or memorandum of understanding between the Canadian institution and the candidate's home institution is desirable but not mandatory.
    • Instead of an agreement, U of A requires undergraduate research candidates to provide a Letter of Invitation from the ß÷ßäÉçÇø professor who has agreed to supervise you.
    • Please review the How to Apply section for details of how to contact ß÷ßäÉçÇø faculty members who may be willing to supervise your research, along with further information about International Agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoU).
  • For graduate applications, an inter-institutional agreement is recommended but not required.
    • If there is no existing exchange agreement, graduate applications which involve a new or established collaboration between professors from U of A and the candidate's home institution will be accepted.
    • Please ensure the people writing your supporting documents outline the benefits of this collaboration between professors and how your research stay will contribute to the strengthening of these research relationships (in detail with specifics, not generalities).
  • Applicants must be enrolled as a full-time, regular student in their proposed degree program at the time of application. Applicants must be continuing students who plan to return to their home country immediately after their research stay is finished.
    • For example, if the application period falls during a gap between the student's Master's and PhD enrollment, unfortunately, they will not be deemed eligible for the current scholarship year. If this situation applies to you, it is recommended that you apply next year.
  • Scholarships cannot be deferred and are not renewable.
  • Priority will be given to candidates who have not previously received a scholarship under any Global Affairs Canada scholarship program.
  • Scholarships are not taxable for either the Canadian institution or the scholarship recipient.
  • ß÷ßäÉçÇø does not charge tuition and fees to Global Affairs Canada International Scholarship recipients.
  • Please review answers to our Frequently Asked Questions before starting an application.
