EASIA 102: East Asian Languages and Cultures
Yoshi Ono
This course examines the diversity and complexity of languages and cultures of East Asia and in particular, the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages and cultures. In this course, we will explore the similarities and differences of the three East Asian languages from linguistic, cultural, and nonverbal perspectives. This course will guide us with conceptual frameworks and analytical tools to examine our own and others’ languages and language-related cultures systematically. We will survey East Asian languages by taking a close look at their sound systems, writing systems, word systems, grammatical structures, and communication styles that are shaped by socio-cultural factors.
