The Faculty of Education is revising its Bachelor of Education programs. This includes: 4-year Elementary Education, After Degree in Elementary Education, 4-year Secondary Education, and After Degree in Secondary Education. The current degree requirements can be found  in the University Calendar.

This program revision responds to the University's Student Experience Action Plan, ß÷ßäÉçÇø's  expectations, 2019 U of A BEd Program Review and Consultations, BEd Program Quality Assurance Review, Faculty of Education's restructuring, and expressed needs of ß÷ßäÉçÇø schools. The following information is based on the efforts of an Undergraduate Program Review Working Group and subcommittees, along with early consultation.

We are now seeking your feedback! Based on the following information, could you please take a few moments to provide some thoughts and ideas for the Working Group to consider in finalizing the program revisions?

Overview

The revised BEd programs provide:

  • increased emphasis on our Faculty's strength to provide teachable-area specialist learning opportunities to students, with future options to develop in-house content courses (e.g., Science for Science Teachers)
  • consistency through parallel structure across the Elementary and Secondary programs with less complexity, creating fewer pathways
  • more student agency through increased course choices and flexibility, which focuses on meaningful student experience
  • broader teacher preparation in teachable areas, complementary educational topics, and across grade levels, so teachers can meet the needs of students in diverse classrooms

Julia

Woman working in a chemistry labHi! My name is Julia and I was born and raised in Rocky Mountain House. I am a secondary chemistry major and math minor. My program includes 27 credits of chemistry courses that I took in the Faculty of Science here at the UofA. I did a great course called Science and Religion (CHRTC 350) from St. Joseph’s College that also applied to my major. I did four courses from the math department to get the 12 credits for my minor.

I really want to move back home to Rocky Mountain House so I decided to do the Certificate in Catholic Education from St. Joseph’s College so that I have the option to teach at either West Central High School or St. Dominic Catholic High School in Rocky.

I plan to do my AFX in Rocky and my IFX in Edmonton.

Matthew

MathewHi! I am Matthew and I am in the elementary program. I did my EDFX 200 (Orientation Field Experience) at McKernan School which is super close to campus so I could take the LRT from my home in south Edmonton. I was in French Immersion from K-12 and went to Harry Ainlay for high school. I didn’t think I wanted to teach French Immersion but after EDFX 200 at McKernan, I realized that it might be a great option for me. My major is in elementary and my minor is Social Studies. I have enough open space in my program to add a second minor so I am going to learn more about teaching French as a second language. I already have the language proficiency so am looking forward to taking courses in linguistics and anthropology as well as learning more about French culture. I am also going to take a course in French-English translation.

I am looking forward to my IPT and APT terms and hope I can do either my IFX or AFX in a French Immersion classroom.

Andy

AndyHi! My name is Andy and I was born in the Edmonton area. I spent a few years when I was in Elementary school in Montreal where I learned French and continued in French Immersion until Grade 9. I didn’t love school so decided to pursue a program in construction and renovation technology. I moved out of ß÷ßäÉçÇø to complete that program and then moved back to Edmonton. I have been working for a construction company for a little over a year. During that time, I started to volunteer as a coach for badminton, volleyball, and curling at a neighbourhood junior high school. I discovered that I really like working with junior high kids. I did a bit of volunteer work with a CTS teacher at a local junior high school and that confirmed that this might be the career for me.

I decided to apply to the Faculty of Education to be a CTS Construction teacher with a minor in French as a Second Language. I am early in my program but my diploma transferred into the program to count for some of my major courses. I am doing my EDFX 200 in the winter term. I am excited to see what is happening in K-9 classrooms. I am taking my English and some French courses this year as well as some more early education courses.

Maryam

MaryamMy name is Maryam and I am in the elementary program. I was born in Edmonton but my older siblings were born in Pakistan. My parents came to Canada in 1999. I went to school in north Edmonton and loved that there was a lot of diversity in my classrooms. My minor is science and I love hands-on learning. I did my Orientation Field Experience at Dr. Donald Massey school and realized then that I was really interested in working with students in the early grades and so I have decided to do a CTA in early childhood education to learn more about early literacy and numeracy. I loved seeing students from so many different countries who were newcomers to Edmonton. I am going to take EDPS 411 - Cross Cultural Studies in Education - to help me better understand how to support all of the students and families in my class.

I am hoping to get my AFX in a kindergarten or grade 1 classroom. I am hoping I get to develop and teach a science unit.

Nomusa

NomusaHi! My name is Nomusa and I am in the secondary program. I didn’t start there, though! I started in a BA program with an English major and an Anthropology minor. A friend of mine in Education was taking EDU 100 and I decided to take it with her as an open option in my program. For the CSL assignment, I volunteered in a junior high and found out that I loved helping students work on writing poetry. When the students participated in a slam poetry event, it was amazing to see how their dramatic delivery impacted their peers.

The next year, I transferred into a Secondary Education program, keeping my English major and switching to a Drama minor. With the CTAs, I was able to use my first anthropology course toward my CTA in Black Studies in Education and I’ll still be able to graduate in 4 years. I’m really looking forward to a teaching career where I can mentor Black students to find their voice in junior high through literacy practices like poetry and drama.
