Open Science
The future of science is open
At the NMHI and other leading institutions worldwide, exciting discoveries are made every year. Unfortunately, the systems we currently use to share information create data bias, and impede the process of taking important discoveries and translating them to change patient lives.
Open science is a framework in research that can accelerate the generation of knowledge and its application to the development of novel treatments for neurological and psychiatric conditions by removing barriers to sharing and use of that knowledge. Open science calls for a free flow of information, materials, and data, and this knowledge dissemination in turn can speed innovation for the benefit of those affected by these debilitating conditions. Beyond the opportunity to speed discovery, open access publication is already mandated by some funding agencies.
At the NMHI, we are committed to adopting these three science pillars over time.
- Open Access Publication will allow members and collaborators to publish research results, including negative results, without restriction.
- Open Research Data will allow our scientists to share experimental data freely and meaningfully with institutions around the world, to increase the power of our data sets and to avoid redundancy in our research. We will work towards solutions to achieve the FAIR Data Principles, a community-developed set of guidelines and best practices to ensure that data or any digital object are Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Re-usable.
- Open Source Research Software will allow our members to share software for analysis, simulation, modelling, visualization, or other scripts such that the full source code is available.
