Adolescent Medicine

About the Division

The Division of Adolescent Medicine is a newly established Division in the Department of Pediatrics. Adolescent Medicine is a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons accredited subspecialty. Adolescent Medicine subspecialists focus on taking a developmental approach to complex youth, and support bridging the physical and psychosocial components of youth health. There is a focus on a variety of areas of holistic youth health, including youth with chronic illness, mental health and neurodevelopmental disorders, substance use, sexual and reproductive health, gender diversity, and youth experiencing health impacts of social determinants of health.

Clinical Care and Services

Adolescent Medicine Pediatricians are involved in a variety of clinical services, providing consultation for a broad range of issues. They lead the Adolescent Medicine clinic and Inclusive Care Clinic. With a focus on youth with chronic health conditions, we have integrated our clinical services into a number of multiprofessional clinics to provide support to youth where they need it and avoid multiple appointments.

We participate in clinics such as:

  • The Heavy Menstrual Bleeding Clinic,
  • Lupus/Vasculitis clinic
  • Female Adolescent Multidisciplinary Epilepsy clinic
  • Renal transplant clinic
  • Fontan Multidisciplinary clinic

Adolescent Medicine also supports several outreach clinics, including care for youth at iHuman/Radius (formerly known as Boyle McCauley), as well as sexual and reproductive care to young parents at Braemar School, to better support youth who experience systematic and structural barriers to accessing care.

Education Programs

Currently, we do not have a formal subspecialty training program in Adolescent Medicine. The Division of Adolescent Medicine supports the Stollery Foundation Pediatric Mental Health fellowship.

Adolescent Medicine is very involved in medical education locally and supports programming for Undergraduate Medical Education, the General Pediatrics Residency Program, Subspecialty Pediatric programs such as Developmental Pediatrics, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Subspecialty Residency Program, Fellowship in Addiction Medicine as well as Continuing Medical Education.

Research

The Division of Adolescent Medicine engages in research with youth locally. We also engage with local and national level committees on supporting youth health.
