Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute hosts virtual guest lecture with Dr. Michael Houghton

Dr. Houghton was awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine along with Harvey J. Alter and Charles M. Rice for the discovery of the hepatitis C virus (HCV).

On December 17, 2020, at the invitation from Dr. Prachi Kaul, Director of the , Dr. Michael Houghton, Professor, Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, ß÷ßäÉçÇø delivered a lecture for an Indian audience to commemorate and honour his Nobel Prize-winning research.

The event started with remarks by President and Vice-Chancellor Bill Flanagan, ß÷ßäÉçÇø as well as Dr. Randeep Guleria, Director,  and Dr. S K Sarin, Director,  - two of Indian's premier medical institutions. Over 750 people registered for the event, including a significant number of attendees from government, academia and industry. 

SICI is a bi-national organization that has been supporting the creation of links between academia, government, the business community and civil society organisations in India and Canada by and hosting seminars for over 50 years. Boasting 40 Canadian Member institutions and 114 Indian member institutions, it is recognized as the "flagship institution of India-Canada cooperation".

U of A enjoys a close relationship with SICI, which it has been a member of since 2007. Dr. Shanthi Johnson, Dean, School of Public Health currently serves as a Member-at-Large on SICI's Executive Council.
