Overview

  • Participants will take the Japanese Language Module (Japanese 1 or 2) and Japan Studies Module, and earn a total of 5 credits.

    +++New “にほんご文法 (Japanese Grammar)” classes+++
    • In 2026, ISPJ will offer a new course titled “にほんご文法(初中級)” (Japanese Grammar, beginner to intermediate), consisting of 8-9 classes. This is an optional course, and no credits will be awarded.
    • Students may choose to attend classes (75 minutes per class) of their choice.
    • “ISPJ Japanese 1” students are strongly encouraged to participate. “ISPJ Japanese 2” students are free to participate in these classes.
    • にほんご文法 classes will be taught by ICU students who have completed the ‘Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language’ together with ICU full-time faculty.
    • Fees are included in the ISPJ program fees (no additional costs are required).

Eligibility Requirements

Open to: Those from all faculties who are currently enrolled as degree-seeking students in, or have graduated from, a college or university as of the first day of the program, and have an academic interest in Japan.

Level: Undergraduate, Graduate

GPA: 3.0

Program Criteria: 

  1. A minimum Japanese language level of upper beginner is required at the time of application; (completed CEFR A2.1; equivalent to )
    **This is equivalent to those students who have finished:
       '初級日本語げんき 1 GENKI: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese I',
       'みんなの日本語初級1 'Minna no Nihongo Shokyu I',  or
       'NAKAMA なかま 1'
    *Complete beginners with no prior study are not eligible.
  2. A minimum English language level is required; (TOEFL 79 / IELTS 6.0 is recommended)

Education Abroad Nomination Fee: $250.00 CAD

2025 Program Fee: 369,700JPY  (Approx. $3500 CAD)

Program fees include tuition, on-campus dormitory fees, administrative costs, and textbooks. 


Housing

Participants can stay at the ICU on-campus dormitory. Two students share a room with beds, desks, and air conditioning. The restrooms, kitchen, and shower facilities are shared.

Students who wish to live elsewhere during the program may declare at the time of application. Those who choose to live off-campus will receive a housing fee reduction. .
